Lower Sackville, NS (November 3, 2006) - The sound of music is gaining tempo in Nova Scotia’s schools with the help of an innovative new teaching method. Grade two students at Cavalier Drive School in Lower Sackville are among the first in the country to experience music class using the MusIQ group learning program.
MusIQ software and curriculum, developed by Halifax-based Adventus Interactive, uses an animated, interactive software program and digital piano keyboard to help children develop their musical talent by taking part in lessons, activities and games.
“My students run to their music session, and even the most active kids are completely engaged for the entire lesson. It’s remarkable,” said Kay Newhook-MacDonald, music teacher at Cavalier Drive School.
MusIQ’s group learning model has already received praise from educators and students across North America and from private institutions like the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts in Halifax. The MusIQ method for young children completed a successful trial with the Nova Scotia Department of Education where it received an excellent rating from each of the four schools that participated.
Numerous scientific studies have revealed a positive link between music education for young children and enhanced brain development.
“It is clear that children who participate in early keyboard instruction benefit in a number of ways,” offered Don Reardon, Principal at Cavalier Drive School. “These children, for example, do better in math and science. Behavior and general reading levels have also been shown in studies to improve.”
In spite of this fact, tighter music education budgets in public schools have made it increasingly difficult to provide all children with a serious music learning experience at the key stages of their development.
“As a father of four, I realized that most young people would never have access to a music program of the sort that leads to artistic expression, and lifelong benefit,” said Jim Mullen founder of Adventus Interactive. “Kids today are so comfortable using a computer, and the computer can be so helpful in the learning process, that pairing music education and interactive software seemed like the natural solution.”
